PS2/Linux

The Playstation 2 is rather underpowered as a general-purpose Linux machine, but it does allow you to write code that takes advantage of the unique hardware, e.g. the vector processors. There are some notable supercomputer projects using clusters of PS2's running Linux.

Besides material on the PS2 Linux Community site, the following sites have information on using and programming the Playstation 2 Linux kit.

There is also an alternative Playstation 2 Linux distribution called Black Rhino.

I thought I might do something interesting with the kit, but as a PS2/Linux developer, I didn't do much beyond compiling some standard Linux programs for the Compiled for Your Convenience project.

CFYC

XEmacs 21.4.14 Once it's been untarred, you can run xemacs in place by executing src/xemacs. Invoke make install as root to install xemacs for everyone. See XEmacs Installation page for more instructions, including how to install the optional XEmacs packages. See xemacs.org for general info.
Python 2.2.3 Run python in place from the untarred directory or invoke make install as root to install python for everyone. Note that ps2 linux already has an rpm-packaged python. See python.org for general info.
libpng 1.2.5 Once it's been untarred, invoke make install as root. Note that ps2 linux already has an rpm-packaged libpng. See libpng.org for general info.

Sony support for the Linux kit appears to be waning, and the community site seems to attract a large number of people who barely know anything PC's, much less Linux, yet want (sometimes demand) simple answers on how to make a game on the Playstation 2 running Linux, so I don't plan on doing anything else with the kit, although it makes a nice little network appliance.
